Hello, Goswinks here…

Hi, Mrs Acatcalledpiglit calling.  I chose ‘Goswinks’ since we have five blinking geese…

Well, well, well…  Who’d have thought I’d ever be dragged into the 21st century and the world of blogging??  Trying to become self-sufficient feels more like going back in time.  Wood-burning stoves, solid-fuel ranges, growing your own food, making your own clothing.  Our parents and grandparents started to leave all this behind after WWII, the fifties and sixties encouraging consumers to use more electricity, acquire more labour saving devices and in doing so grow the post-war economy by increasing manufacturing.  As a child of the seventies and eighties I can remember school friends laughing at those of us whose grandparents still had allotments.  Now the waiting lists are years long; decades in some areas.  Apparently more and more of us are looking for ‘the good life’ in the country, escaping the rat race.  We can’t afford to give up the day jobs just yet, and whilst I don’t necessarily feel the need to completely go off grid I am conscious that if I want to know what I’m eating, for example, the best way to be sure is to grow it yourself.  Thankfully my husband enjoys the growing side…  I am more crafty.  I like making things.  I like working with natural materials.  In particular I like wood, natural fibres such as wool, alpaca, silk.  I don’t plan on keeping silkworms but our alpacas provide some fantastic fibre each year.  I have joined a branch of the Guild of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers and enjoy dabbling in natural dyeing techniques and dye stuffs.  So… More of that later!
